The tireless fundraising of a Year 12 Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College student was honoured this week when he won the ‘Young Achiever Award’ at The 2021 North East Lincolnshire Civic Awards, held at Grimsby Town Hall.

George Kavanagh (17) has fundraised for St Andrew’s Hospice since the death of his father from lung cancer nine years ago, raising thousands of pounds in that time.

He promotes and comperes music events in the town and is well-known among his peers. At the weekend he held a fundraiser for Soraya’s Army, raising money for a local girl with a rare condition. The event was held at Room 11 and raised £411.

George said: “I am really happy to win this award. I was nominated for the Pride of Britain Awards last year which was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but to win this award actually means more to me because it is voted for by local people who I try to help.

“I have been through it with my dad and I know that sometimes when you need it the support is not quite there, so being able to help others in my own way means a lot to me.”

George, who auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent as an 11-year-old stand-up comedian, earning praise from David Walliams, is now studying for his A Levels in Business, History, and English Literature at Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College.

“I don’t know what I want to do after this but I feel sure my chosen career will be in entertainment,” he said.

Simon Ritchie, Head of Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College, said everyone is very proud of George’s achievements and his continued commitment to good causes.
