July 2019

Dear Parent / Carer

As we come to the end of the Summer term, the Sixth-Form Leadership Team would like to take this opportunity to wish all parents, carers and students a relaxing summer break. 2018-2019 has been a busy and successful year and students have participated in a wide variety of events within and beyond College. We are extremely proud of their achievements so far and look forward to continued success in the new academic year.

Term Dates:

The Summer term ends on Wednesday 24 July 2019, and students return to College on Tuesday 3 September 2019. Period 3 will be the first lesson of the day, but we ask that all students report to the Drama Hall at 10:05am, where they will be provided with their timetables for the new academic year. Full term dates for next year are attached, and can also be found on the Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College website under 'Sixth Form Guide'.

Examination Dates:

Please be aware that the A Level examination period for our current Year 12 students incorporates both May and June 2020. It is essential that students are present for all of their examinations, and also the critical period leading up to the final examinations, so please avoid making any arrangements during this time. Further details of specific examination dates and individual student examination timetables will be issued when these become available.

Attendance:

Attendance has been very good this year for most students, however, we are still finding that a small minority are missing a worrying amount of lessons. Any absence from College will have a detrimental impact upon student progress, and students are not authorised to miss College in order to take holidays, attend social events, have driving lessons etc. Where a student's attendance is giving serious cause for concern, they will be referred to the Education Welfare Officer and potentially placed upon an attendance contract. Failure to respond to the support offered may result in the withdrawal of entries into external examinations.

University Applications:

Year 12 students have begun preparations for the UCAS application process and have been working on their personal statements during their tutorials throughout the Summer Term. We expect all students to have completed their final drafts by early September, so that we can begin the next phase of the application process. For those students who wish to apply to early entry courses, they must send their final applications to us by Friday 20 September 2019. This will allow us sufficient time to check the applications and personal statements thoroughly before the 15 October deadline. All other UCAS applications will need to be submitted prior to the Christmas break. As usual, our students will receive extensive support with this process, and we look forward to working with them as they plan their next steps.

We would like to wish the students a well-deserved break over the summer, and would also like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for the support you have given us and the students this year; it has been a pleasure working with you.

Yours faithfully
