Geographers Visit Malham Tarn

Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Geography students visit Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales for a field study.

Year 12 students visited Malham Tarn for a Geography Field Trip. They set their own individual enquiry question and set up their own data collection methods, and collected data for their NEA (non-exam assessment).

From this, the students had workshops on statistical tests in order to process the data to prove/disprove statistical significance. They were initially given a tour of the site (including pasture, heath and woodland) and an idea of the wide potential for independent research and equipment available.

Their research focused on either hydrological processes within the catchment, or carbon storage. Students considering carbon storage also used the labs to process soil data (moisture content, PH and mass).
